UTB target top four finish in upcoming Volleyball league

University of Tourism Technology and Business Studies (UTB) volleyball club have set themselves a target to finish in the top four in their second season in the National Volleyball League, according to head coach Sylvester Mbanza.

The Kicukiro-based side finished in seventh position on the table last season but they are looking on how they can compete at highest level next season which will kickoff on January, 15.

“My team is still young, but our aim is to continue building a strong team for the future. The target this season is to finish in top four and play in the playoffs,” said Mbaza.

Mbanza revealed that their team will be aiming for a top four finish this season as they seek to first adapt in their uncharted waters. However, he noted that top teams should expect a tough challenge.

"This is our first season and we need to first adapt and look for the challenges so our target will be seeking to finish in top four, but if any of the top teams slip we will go for the title and other trophies that we are going to play for," he noted

Last week, they played a warm up game against IPRC East when they managed to win 3-1 in terms of preparations.

Last month, they started preparations ahead of the start of the 2018 national league, which will kick off in two weeks.

UTB have never won the league title, but head coach Sylvester Mbanza and the club management have vowed to bring an end to the long drought.

UTB signed right centre players Flely Muyuku (IPRC South), William Mudahemuka (Gisagara), left attacker Fred Rufu Mutabazi from Kirehe, setter Jean Paul Sibomana from IPRC South and Gisagara left attacker Patrick Kavalo Akimana.

They joined other players who signed last season, including centre John Nkurunziza, Patrick Ruzindana, Guillaume Irakarama, Gideon Mutabazi, Emmanuel Mugisha, Claude Niyibizi and libero Claude Nshimiyimana and Jules Niyibizi.

Gisagara and Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) are the defending champions in the men and women leagues. Both UNIK and RRA will represent Rwanda at the 2018 Africa Club Championships.
