FERWAFA presidential elections due in 90 days
FERWAFA PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS:
The FERWAFA Elective General Assembly has given the mandate to the current Executive Committee to continue their duties of serving Rwanda Football Federation for a transition period of 90 days.
The decision was reached after Madam Rwemalika Felicite who was vying unopposed to serve as the next president of Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) failed to meet the majority vote as required by FERWAFA regulations.
Initially, Madam Rwemalika who was battling for the top seat against incumbent president Nzamwita Vincent was left unopposed after incumbent Mr. Nzamwita withdrew from the race citing personal and family reasons.
Unopposed Madam Rwemalika to be declared the president, she was required to secure the majority vote from the General Assembly members hence the need for voting to proceed.
The voting process attracted fifty two members who constitute Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) namely; 16 first division clubs, 24 second division clubs, 9 women clubs and three affiliate associations.
The FERWAFA Electoral Commission President Adolphe Kalisa alongside fellow committee members and observers monitored and tallied the votes.
Of the 52 members who voted, Madam Rwemalika secured 13 votes while 39 votes were invalid according to the Electoral Commission.
Going by the result, Madam Rwemalika, the lone candidate for the FERWAFA Presidential seat didn’t meet the required majority vote, of 26+1, a feat which forced the Electoral Commission to go for a closed-door meeting to decide on the way forward.
After 20 minutes of deliberations, the FERWAFA Electoral Commission President Kalisa addressed the General Assembly on their decision which was taken based on the Electoral Code.
He said, “After counting of the votes, we declare that Rwemalika got 13 votes while 39 votes were invalid. Since, the lone candidate Rwemalika didn’t get the required majority vote, the FERWAFA bodies shall continue to exercise their duties until the completion of the electoral process according to article 28 of the FERWAFA Electoral Code,”
He further added, “The FERWAFA Executive Committee will continue their duties as mandated and among those is to prepare the next elective general Assembly which should be held between 60-90 days,”
This means that the current executive committee led by Nzamwita Vincent will serve a transition period of three months as they prepare the next elective general assembly whose date will be known after they convene their first meeting in January, 2018.
It’s to that end that the newly elected Ferwafa president and his Executive Committee will come into office to serve a four-year term.
The just concluded FERWAFA Elective General Assembly had attracted election observers led by FIFA council, CAF 2nd Vice President and FECOFA President Constant Omari Selemani and Munyanziza Gervais from the Ministry of Sports and Festus Bizimana from Rwanda National Olympic Committee.
