Louis Meintjes: 2017 African Cyclist
Four years after his first consecration in 2013, Louis Meintjes was elected African Cyclist of the Year 2017.
According to press release from organisers, this trophy was created six years ago by the organisers of La Tropicale Amissa Bongo. The trophy is to encourage the development of African cycling, rewarding the best African rider and as a way of making African cycling known at global scale.
The South African Louis Meintjes of the UAE Emirates Team was plebiscited by the jury chaired by Bernard Hinault, the five-time winner of the Tour de France and made up of thirty members, including African riders, coaches and leaders. The organisers of cycling events on the continent but also specialized journalists from Africa and Europe who follow all the cycling races in Africa.
« It’s a huge honor, said Louis Meintjes. I am very thankful that I have the support of the people of the african continent. And hope I can keep the african flag flying high in 2018.»
Rwandan Rider of Dimension Data Areruya Joseph ranks second while teammate Merhawi KUDUS from Eritrea is third-placed at continental level.
